Hallstatt

With a 7,000-year history, this World Heritage Site is a living testimony to times gone by. Prehistoric mining in Hallstatt was so important that an entire epoch, the Hallstatt period, was named after it. Here you will find the oldest salt mine in the world, and since 1997 Hallstatt, with its unique Schwalbennest houses built directly into the rock, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
